Overview

StrudelLive is a live-coding music tool born from a question: what happens when AI and a person compose together, taking turns, while the music plays? Not a generator that spits out a finished track, but an interlocutor that writes and listens.

The mechanism is deliberately simple: patterns are files on disk, the AI edits them and the app hot-reloads without a rebuild. The result is that you hear the music change as it is written, like watching someone program a track live.

Each block can be evaluated individually and the turns between human and agent are explicit: you write, you listen, you respond. It is a musical conversation rather than an automation, and precisely for this reason control always stays in the listener's hands.

The project ships ready-made jazz patterns — swing drums, walking bass, ii–V–I progressions — and a full drum'n'bass track at 174 BPM, because to improvise you need to start from something solid. It runs on Next.js 16 and React 19 with @strudel/repl.

StrudelLive explores the boundary between creativity and automation: AI does not replace the musician, it gives them a partner to play with. It is the kind of experiment that holds two passions together, code and music, and makes them talk.
